Debt Settlement: Know the Pros and Cons

August 25, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

Many people who select a debt settlement program may have already tried credit card consolidation in an effort to resolve their financial difficulties, but may not have been satisfied with the arrangements or the amount of time it was taking to pay off what they owed. For these individuals, debt settlement may provide a faster way to eliminate their debts for the least possible amount of money, while avoiding bankruptcy court. It has quickly become one of the preferred debt remedy solutions.

The process of debt settlement or credit card debt settlement involves negotiating a lower payoff amount to resolve the outstanding debt owed to a creditor. Typically, debt settlement should be considered a course of action only for those individuals under extreme financial distress, who are having difficulty meeting even basic financial obligations.

When considering debt settlement as an option for reducing credit card debt, remember that there is no guarantee that an original creditor or even a collector will settle for less than the full amount owed. Some attorneys acting as collectors may be particularly difficult to settle with. Larger collection agencies are often easier to negotiate a reduced settlement with.

There are many reasons to try to settle your debts through debt settlement. There are also many reasons not to go this route for your debt remedy solution. To make sure you are prepared for what may come, here are some of the “pros” and the “cons” of credit card debt settlement. Remember that the more you know before you start this process, the better off you will be.

The “Pros”

? You may be able to settle your credit card debts for pennies on the dollar, potentially saving you thousands of dollars in the long run.

? Your unsecured debts may be resolved within months or even a few years, freeing up your cash flow much more quickly than long-term credit card consolidation programs.

? The monthly commitment amount designed by debt settlement services is almost always significantly less than credit counseling debt management programs, and debt consolidation loan payments. This gives you much needed breathing room for household and fixed obligation expenditures.

? The credit card debt settlement process, as such, will not appear on your credit record, and your accounts will eventually be marked as “paid” or “settled.” (See the “cons” for the other side of this coin.)

? The effects of settlements on your credit rating/FICO score will drop off more quickly than a bankruptcy would (a bankruptcy discharge remains on your credit report for up to 10 years).

The “Cons”

? While your payments are being withheld from the creditors, you may receive harassing calls from your creditors and collection agencies. The debt settlement company may request creditors to stop calling, but that does not mean they will honor those requests.

? Late fees will continue to accrue on your unpaid accounts, piling up and increasing your total amount due. Should your creditors refuse to play the game, you could find yourself in an even greater financial mess than you started with.

? It is possible that your settled debts may be noted on your credit report as “settled” or “settled for partial” rather than “paid in full” which is the most desirable credit report notation.

? Any savings off the total amount due is reportable to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as forgiven debt, which is considered a form of income.

It’s usually better to try resolving your own financial issues before opting for a credit card debt settlement program that will likely add further damage to your credit history. There are ways to embark upon your own debt remedy solution without having to contract a professional debt service. However, every individual’s financial situation is unique as are the circumstances that created the financial problems. Only you know the details of your financial dilemma and what progress is possible to achieve on your own.

Services Offered by Debt Settlement Companies

August 1, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

Debt settlement companies are essential parties to debt negotiation. Credit card debts are a major problem with many individuals. Even if you miss a single payment, you would be forced to pay a large amount of money to the company. The credit card companies would consider every single day after you miss payments and then apply a higher rate of interest to the amount you owe. In this way, the interest builds up and you have to pay an even larger sum of money. If you are having recurring debts and if you are not able to pay off all of them, then you can get the help of debt settlement companies.

What debt settlement companies can do for you

With the increasing number of debtors, there are a lot of debt settlement companies that can help people get rid of their debts. Basically, these companies will negotiate with your creditors to lower the amount of money you have to pay the former. Certain companies may offer you to pay back 50% of the actual money you owe them. Creditors would accept this type of offer proposed by debt settlement companies due to the fact that they want all things cleared and settled. They would rather have a lower amount of interest than the possibility getting nothing from you if you would file for bankruptcy and be declared insolvent.

You can expect the debt settlement companies to reduce or cancel late fees and other fees imposed by the creditors. These companies would arrive at a settlement plan for you so that you can pay off your debts in a few years and stay debt free after that.

Many people think that these companies take the responsibility of paying your debts. Debt settlement companies merely act as mediators between debtor and creditor, not another loan company at that. You cannot expect these companies to pay off your debts just for paying a small fee. You have to know that the services offered by debt settlement companies are not debt consolidation services.

What should you pay for the services

Debt settlement companies are profit organizations which would charge you a fee for the services they render. A set up fee is common with most of the companies. You have to pay the company for arriving at a settlement plan for you.

The settlement company will then negotiate with your creditor and reduce the amount of money you are obliged to pay. Certain companies will pay the creditor on a monthly basis while others pay the creditors a lump sum amount after you have accumulated a specific sum of money in your trust account. Expensive debt settlement companies will charge you for maintaining your account.

Some mishaps on the services of debt settlement companies

Though the debt settlement companies promise that your creditors would not sue you, there are possibilities for such mishap to happen. After negotiation, if you are unable to make regular payments or if you miss your payments, the creditors can sue you and this would have a very bad effect on your credit rating. The result of everything lies in your discipline to pay for what you owe. Remember that debt settlement companies are negotiators and their services can only be possible if you would want them to do things for you.

A Christian Debt Relief Solution: Debt Settlement

June 5, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

Christian families are impacted by difficulties with mounting credit card debt just like non-Christian families. Christians often can be particularly sensitive to finding themselves faced with a situation where they may not be able to meet their unsecured debt commitments. There are many types of Christian credit card debt help out there, and quickly becoming one of the most popular is Christian debt settlement. The reasons for its popularity have been summarized below. Christian debt settlement services are fast becoming one of the preferred forms of Christian debt relief.

Why Choose Debt Settlement as your method of Christian Debt Relief?

Debt settlement offers many attractive debt reduction features. One of the most appealing is the time frame to complete a debt settlement program. While each person’s financial situation is unique, most Christian debt settlement programs take 1-3 years to complete. This is significantly “shorter” than credit counseling or debt consolidation loan plans. Furthermore, because the credit card debts are negotiated down to a lesser amount which is ultimately accepted by the creditor, there is the potential to save thousands of dollars in the amount actually paid out in this type of debt program. In most cases, the negotiated amount represents a reduction of 30%-50% of your original debt amount.

Christian debt settlement services are most well received by those individuals who have already become unable to meet the monthly minimum payment amounts with consistency or timeliness. They are undoubtedly experiencing harassing creditor calls, and probably do not know where to turn. Interest rates have been increased to ridiculously high levels, and it seems the credit card debt is accumulating by the very minute! If you are seeking a Christian debt relief solution that really provides “some quick stress relief”, then a debt settlement service may be an appropriate choice for you. They will contact your creditors immediately and attempt to work with them directly by diverting the calls to their customer service area. This can lighten the burden significantly when the abusive or harassing creditor calls coming into your home or office are minimized.

How Does Debt Settlement Actually Work?

When debts become delinquent, there will be an accumulation of late fees and interest charges. In the debt settlement process, you set aside a monthly payment amount that is considered your “commitment” to your unsecured debt problem. Depending upon the debt settlement firm you select, this monthly payment may be remitted to them and kept in a “trust account” or it may be set aside in your own account. These payments are what will be used to begin negotiating with your creditors. The more you save for this settlement process, the faster you will find you are out of debt!

Christian debt settlement firms contact your creditors directly and work out what will be a “lump sum” offering, the reduced or negotiated amount based on your current debt balance. Their expertise in this area typically results in a savings of anywhere from 30% – 50% of the balance owed. When a mutual agreement is reached for the negotiated amount, the creditor is then paid in full, either directly by you using your accumulated funds, or by the debt settlement firm if they maintain your trust account. The settlement of this debt is then considered complete and you begin targeting the next credit card debt for your negotiation phase.

Your debt settlement firm will be there to advise you along the way, and insure you receive the proper documentation necessary to show that your creditor has accepted a lesser amount as full consideration for your debt owed.

What Else Should You Know About Debt Settlement?

As is true of all the solutions for Christian credit card debt help, debt settlement does have its downside and it is important that you are aware of those points before contracting with any service. There is no guarantee that all your creditors will in fact accept a reduced amount for your credit card debt. While debt settlement firms have expertise in this area, this is a cautionary piece of information you need to know! Some creditors may become highly aggressive and not only refuse to negotiate on your total balance due, but may pursue litigation to seek a judgment that will appear on your credit report.

Additionally, there are federal income tax implications related to the “forgiven portion” of your credit card debt. This is taxable on your income tax return. Be sure to ask all the relevant questions and prepare for the impact of this at tax filing time.

In Summary:

Many options are available if you are seriously seeking Christian credit card debt help. The most important thing to remember as you embark upon your search for the Christian debt relief method that is right for you and your family, is that you focus on thoroughly investigating all the benefits as well as the negatives of any debt reduction solution you are considering. While Christians in pursuit of credit card debt relief may prefer to use a Christian debt settlement firm, it may be more important to verify a good business record (BBB) and a significant length of time in the debt settlement industry before you jump into any decision.

How do I go about consolidating my credit card debt?

April 21, 2010 by admin · 12 Comments

4044211495 6ab827ba47 m How do I go about consolidating my credit card debt?I have a good credit score, last time I checked about 6 months ago it was about 720-730. Recently I have acquired a big credit card debt, about $9,000 on one credit card (with a limit of $10,000) and about $3,000 on another one (with a limit of $5,000) for many different personal reasons. After the whole spending money ordeal was over, I was left with all this debt on my credit cards. Since then, I have cut back on all unnecessary spending, besides the obvious things like food, gas, etc. I have never been late on payments and have never been over the credit limit. I Also try to pay an extra hundred bucks on top of the minimum payment due when I can. Are there any good ideas on how to consolidate these two credit card debts and help me out with all this? Thanks!

What is the best way to pay off credit card debt?

April 10, 2010 by admin · 1 Comment

3255328169 4aa90a33de m What is the best way to pay off credit card debt?I’ve heard of companies like cureadebt.com that will settle your credit card debts for 70% of the amount owed. I’ve also heard of government grants to pay unsecured debt(credit cards), but I don’t know where to get the info on them. I’m considering a second mortgage to pay these off with a lower interest rate. Thoughts?

We no longer use credit cards, so the balance only increases because of high interest rates.

Credit Card Debt Settlement

April 3, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

Credit card debts are like a financial black hole which can rob your good night sleep. So first we need to know how to destroy or do away credit card debts. If you are one of those who use their credit cards at every other place, then you are most likely to face huge credit card debts in future which can also lead to bankruptcy.

After using your credit card you are sure to pile up a lot of credit card debts. Now if you are unable to clear all your debts you have 2 options in front of you. They are bankruptcy or debt settlement. In debt settlement process you can negotiate with your creditors for settling at a lower amount. Here the amount which you will pay after negotiating with your creditors will be about 40-60% of the original debt you owed to them. In short you will save a lot of money from this.

Basically, you have two options. In the first case you can go ahead on your own and start the negotiation process with your creditors and settle for a lower payment. In this case you need to keep a few things in mind. It is always better to talk to your creditors in person rather than over phone. Put down the final deal on paper as you might need to produce this as a piece of documental proof later on. While sending mail communications always use registered post as this is always a safer option. Maintain the details of the people you are talking to and never show your eagerness to settle down quickly as this may go against your case.

The other option is approaching a debt settlement company. Debt settlement company will basically negotiate on your behalf with your creditors to settle for a much lower debt repayment. They will charge a certain percentage of your debt as their fees. In this case your burden comes down a lot as the company will take care of the things from your side.

The timelines of solving a case can vary from a couple of months to a few years. If you are very eager to solve your case quickly it can be done in 3-9 months of time period. In very exceptional cases the time period can stretch from 1 to 4 years. But most of the cases get solved within a year’s time. So its always better to start thinking of Debt Settlement early so that you don’t have to face bankruptcy situation in future.
